Jazz 1
Jazz I Audition Information 2022-23
Auditions for Jazz 1 will be conducted as a group starting on Tuesday, September 27, from 6:30am to 7:40am. Families should drop off students at the back door to the band room (at the back of the school) each day. Individual or section call backs will be conducted as needed. Auditions may go as long as it takes for us to make the best decision for the program and to select students for Jazz I, but my hope is to be done by Friday, September 30.
Please be prepared to play in both ensemble and solo situations. All students will be asked to play the following scales alone and in front of the group: (concert key) Bb major scale, and a chromatic scale to the highest and lowest points of their range. All students should be prepared to play “Let it Snow” and “Jingle Bell Rock” - they will be asked to play a portion of each tune in front of the ensemble. Soloing/improvising opportunities over the Bb blues will be available for students interested in doing so. All students are encouraged to improvise if they are comfortable, and the courage and willingness to do so will be noted.
Rhythm Section (Guitar, Piano, Bass, Drums) – Please be ready to play the scales mentioned above, as well as comping the blues in Bb, sight-reading, and improvising. Piano and Guitar should be ready to attempt or demonstrate both Chord Reading/Chord Charts and traditional music notation.
Drummers – Please be ready to demonstrate grooves and patterns over medium swing, and any other groove of your choice. Be ready to take direction and try new things.
Jazz I rehearsals will begin Monday, October 3, and will meet Monday-Thursday from 6:30am to 7:40am.
